BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The Baxter Springs City Council this week approved Mayor Huey York’s reappointment of city department heads.
York reappointed Robert Myers as city attorney; Donna Wixon, city clerk; Dick Graue, city treasurer; Haskell Carter, city judge; David Edmondson, police chief; and Robin Wene, fire chief.
The council also approved York’s appointments of residents to the recreation commission, library board and museum board.
In other business Tuesday, the council:
Paid bills and payroll totaling $169,302.
Approved making a donation of $2,505 to the Baxter Springs Fire Department to be used for supplemental insurance.
Approved a bid of $30 per lot from Qualls Lawn Care to mow properties whose owners have received weed notices from the city.
Approved paying $3,600 to conduct a survey for Bagcraft Papercon.
Approved bids from Moates Excavation of $2,500 to demolish a dilapidated building at 2118 East Ave. and a bid of $2,200 to demolish a dilapidated building at 304 Grant Ave.
The company is owned by City Council member Cory Moates. Myers, the city attorney, said there was nothing inappropriate about the action because the bidding procedure was open to everyone and Moates submitted the only bid. Moates abstained from voting on the measure.
Went behind closed doors for 20 minutes under the exception to the Kansas open-meetings law for discussion of nonelected personnel. No action resulted when the public was readmitted to the meeting.
Circus not coming
The Baxter Springs City Council on Tuesday took no action on a request by the Family Fun Circus Show to set up May 1 in Kiwanis Park.
