Carney Hall made PSU a ‘cultural center’

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Randy Roberts said Pittsburg State University hasn’t always been without a performing arts center. In fact, it had a popular one for nearly 60 years.
Carney Hall, which was finished in 1919, had a 3,000-seat auditorium, which was used until the building’s condemnation in 1978. It was demolished in 1980.
Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Marcel Marceau, Norman Mailer, Alex Haley and Strom Thurmond are just a few of the speakers, activists, musicians and performers who appeared at Carney Hall, said Roberts, the university’s historian.
“It really made this campus one of the cultural centers of the region,” he said.
Roberts said the first performance in Carney Hall was by Will Marion Cook, a well-known jazz musician at the time. At the last performance in the auditorium, Cook protege Eva Jessye performed for the 75th anniversary of the university’s founding.
Roberts said the building, which housed math and science classrooms in addition to the auditorium, was still in frequent use in the 1970s. A crumbling foundation and cracking walls led university officials to abandon the building.
Heckert-Wells Hall, a building used mainly for math and science classes, now stands in its place, but an auditorium was never rebuilt, leaving the campus without a large venue for plays and other performances.
“If you ask someone in the theater department or communication department, yes, (the loss of a performing arts center) definitely had an impact,” Roberts said. “But I think one of the bigger impacts is that we’ve probably had fewer encounters with the regional community at large.”
