Published November 04, 2008 11:10 pm - Ottawa County: Durborow elected to first full term Picher voters approve change in government Durborow elected to first full term By Joe Hadsall jhadsall@joplinglobe.com MIAMI, Okla. — Voters on Tuesday returned Ottawa County Sheriff Terry Durborow to office. Durborow, 54, D-Miami, was elected 7,471 to 3,446 over Republican challenger Jeff Wright, 47, according to complete, unofficial returns. “I appreciate the citizens of Ottawa County electing me,” Durborow said. “I’m looking forward to serving another term.” Durborow was elected in 2006 to serve the remaining two years of the term of former Sheriff Dennis King, who resigned to take a job in the private sector. This will be his first full term as sheriff. Durborow said things will be business as usual. “We’re going to forge ahead with the progress we’ve made in the department, and keep on rolling,” he said. Meanwhile, a majority of voters in Picher approved a change in the town’s form of government, 130 to 55. Voters were asked whether to change to the 1b Town Board of Trustees form of government. Turnout was high in Ottawa County. A total of 11,497 of the county’s 17,919 registered voters cast ballots, for a turnout of 64.1 percent.
