NEOSHO, Mo. — A Joplin man who was involved in a traffic accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman last year in south Joplin will stand trial on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the first degree.

Kaleb N. Miller, 20, was bound over to Newton County Circuit Court after waiving his preliminary hearing Monday. He also will stand trial on two counts of second-degree assault.

Miller is accused of causing the death of Kirsten Keczkemethy, a passenger in the car Miller was driving on Sept. 17, 2007. He also is charged with causing serious injuries to Robert Adkins, 81, and Faye Adkins, 84, both of Joplin, who were the occupants of one of two vehicles Miller’s car reportedly struck.

Keczkemethy, the daughter of Joplin High School teacher William Keczkemethy, died a few hours later at Freeman Hospital West.

A Joplin Police Department accident report states that Miller was westbound on 32nd Street in the inside lane and crossed into the eastbound lanes just past McConnell Avenue. His vehicle, a Mercury Mystique, struck the Adkins’ vehicle, which was eastbound in the inside lane, the report says. Miller’s vehicle then struck another eastbound vehicle driven by Lindsey D. Butler, 19, of Neosho, the report says.

A probable-cause affidavit states that witnesses alleged Miller was “driving out of control” at speeds of 55 to 60 mph in a 40-mph zone. The witnesses also alleged that Miller’s vehicle struck a curb, crossed all westbound lanes and passed vehicles in the turning lane before he appeared to overcorrect, causing his vehicle to shoot into the eastbound lanes.

The police report states that Robert Adkins, who was driving, suffered a broken sternum, and his wife suffered a broken sternum, and fractured ribs, clavicle and shoulder.

Miller was severely injured and taken to Freeman Hospital West for treatment. The third driver, Butler, did not seek treatment the day of the accident, according to the police report.
