PINEVILLE, Mo. — A Rogers, Ark., man drowned Friday in a creek in McDonald County, according to the Missouri State Water Patrol.
The body of Jose Cordero, 24, was recovered at 6:20 p.m. from Big Sugar Creek at Big Rock Park, the water patrol said. The water where the body was recovered was about 10-feet deep.
At about 5:15 p.m., Cordero was reportedly swimming in the creek and began to struggle in the current before he went under and did not resurface, the patrol said.
A 19-year-old Anderson man drowned under similar circumstances on June 21 in Indian Creek near Anderson. Carlos Alejo-Chavez was swept away by swift waters at Dabbs Greer Town Hole Park, according to the water patrol.
The Associated Press reported that at least 22 people have drowned in Missouri’s lakes and rivers through June 20, with at least seven of the deaths being attributed to “strong currents.”
Many area rivers and streams have been up this year because of heavy rains, with about 40 inches of rain recorded though June 30 at the Joplin Regional Airport.
Last year was also dangerous, with 44 drowning deaths, well above the normal annual average of 19 to 28 deaths.
New lake rules
Last week, Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt signed a bill to improve boating safety on Missouri’s waterways. House Bill 1715 reduces the legal blood alcohol content limit from .10 to .08 for operation of a vessel on the water. The changes become effective Aug. 28.
