Joplin police are investigating after a body was discovered this morning near the intersection of interstates 44 and 49.

Police said they were notified shortly after 9:30 a.m. today by a Missouri Department of Transportation mowing crew that a body had been found near the interstates. Officers found the body located on a hillside on the north side of the I-44 westbound ramp to southbound I-49, they said in a news release.

The police department has launched an investigation into the death and is assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Police said in a second statement that the body is believed to be that of a male adult. No positive identification has been made; an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning in Kansas City.
