Hikes, workshopsplanned this spring

March 15: Prairie Chicken Hike at Prairie State Park near Liberal at 7:30 a.m. Participants should meet at the park visitors center. For information, call the park at (417) 843-6711.

March 22: Naturescaping workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Conservation Nature Center, in Springfield. The workshop emphasizes landscaping with native plant species providing urban habitat for a diversity of wildlife and offering alternatives to the traditional water- and chemical-dependent manicured lawn.

The day will also include exhibitors and a plant sale featuring many native plants that are drought resistant and beneficial to wildlife. Call (417) 888-4237 for information. No fee or registration required for programs.

March 22: A basic map and compass clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville, Ark. A G.P.S. clinic will be held from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. that day. For more information, call the store at (479) 521-6340.

March 28: Wildflower hike for children from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Conservation Nature Center in Springfield. After a short hike, children will make a "flowery" craft to take home. Ages 3-6. For information, or to register, call (417) 888-4237.

March 29: Free canoe and kayak demonstrations for the public will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pack Rat Outdoor Center at 209 W. Sunbridge Drive in Fayetteville, Ark. For more information, call (479) 521-6340.

March 29-30 Backpacker magazine's "Road Team" will be at Bass Pro Shops as part of their 2003 Get Out More! Tour. The team, consisting of Brent and Amy Anslinger, will offer advice and answer questions about equipment, planning trips, and more. For information, call Bass Pro at 620-231-4030.

March 30: Wildflower Workshop at Roaring River State Park near Cassville from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will learn wildlife nomenclature, other details and take short hikes to different habitats in the park. Meet at the nature center. For information, call (417) 847-3742.

April 1: Naturescaping workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at the Walter Woods Conservation Area south of Joplin. The workshop will cover native plants that attract songbirds, butterflies and other native wildlife. This program is free of charge but due to limited seating, all participants must pre-register. April 5-6: Wildflower Weekend at Devil's Den State Park in northwest Arkansas. Guided walks and programs will help participants identify and learn more about the area's wildflowers. For information, call Harry Harnish (479) 761-3325.

April 12: A Map and Compass Field Class will begin at 8 a.m. and last through the afternoon. Participants will use a map and compass to find a hidden object in the Ozark National Forest near Wedington. The class is sponsored by Pack Rat Outdoor Center, Fayetteville, Ark. April 12-13: Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville, Ark., will sponsor a women's-only backpacking clinic. Participants must be able to walk five miles per day and be 18 years old. This is a beginner's clinic and participants will need to attend two meetings in advance of the outing, on March 27 and April 11. For more information, call (479) 521-6340.
