After weeks of waiting for schedules to align, the Joplin Public Library will host a mural unveiling Sunday.
The mural, designed by marine artist Wyland and replicated on glass tiles by Joplin business Images in Tile, was a duplicate prize for a fundraising auction to benefit art classes in the Joplin School District.
The work, which was used by the company for its booth at a trade show, was the prize in a fundraising auction. Art Weiss was outbid at the last moment, but was able to get a second version from the artist and Paul Whitehill, president of Images in Tile.
Weiss donated the mural to the library in memory of his father. It was installed and covered in January.
“Images in Tile took care of getting it installed,” said library director Jacque Gage. “It went up one night when we were closed, and covered ever since.”
The mural is above the reference desk, a central focal point in the library, Gage said.
The unveiling will include a check presentation to the Joplin School District. Wyland’s mother also donated nine books and four DVDs about the artist’s life, Gage said. Those titles will be available for checkout.
