KAPstone offersopen house

KAPstone House will stage a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at 2004 S. Joplin Ave.

The event will mark the beginning of the fall grief-support programs. The ceremony is open to the public. An ice-cream reception will follow the ceremony and tours will be offered of the new center.

The mission of the center is to provide Joplin and area communities with a safe and understanding place for grieving children, teens and their families. Only peer support is offered, not counseling, medical or legal assistance.

Tickets on salefor magic show

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Children's magician Doug Billingsly will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium, 503 N. Pine St., as part of Little Balkans Days.

Billingsly's educational show features tigers, bears and other wild animals.

Adult tickets are $10 for seating on the main floor and $8 for balcony seats. Tickets for children cost $5 for all seats. Family ticket packages, for two adults and three children, are $25.

Library to holdused-book sale

CARTHAGE, Mo. - Friends of the Carthage Public Library will hold a used-book sale from 8 a.m. to noon today at the library annex, 501 S. Garrison Ave.

The library will be closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Faculty memberreceives award

PARSONS, Kan. - John Chastain of Parsons has won Labette Community College's Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award for 2003-04.

Criteria for the award include teaching effectiveness, involvement with students, professional development and community service. Teachers are nominated by their students for the award.

Chastain is active in campus activities, including serving on the program review of the extension program, the selection committee for the director of community services and the extension committee.

Blood donations sought

Blood donations will be accepted at three sites this week by the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks.

On Wednesday, hours will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Cox Monett Hospital, 801 Lincoln St.

Hours will be from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Park Street Christian Church at El Dorado Springs.

Blood donations will also be taken from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Carthage.

Donations are accepted Monday through Thursday at the Joplin Donor Center, 2639 E. 32nd St. Details: 626-8323.

Dance planned for area seniors

MIAMI, Okla. - A luau dance for area seniors is slated from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday at the Miami Senior Center, 2104 Denver Harnar Drive.

Music will be provided by the Bobby Russell Band.

The cost is $3 a person. Individuals attending are to wear Hawaiian attire and bring finger foods.
