Santa to ridetrain to Lamar

LAMAR, Mo. - Santa Claus will be riding a train into Lamar today.

About 4:05 this afternoon, a Missouri and Northern Arkansas train will arrive on the tracks at 10th Street, just East of Truman Street, carrying jolly ol' St. Nick.

There is no admission charge, and kids and parents will be allowed to walk through the caboose and visit Santa. Candy will be handed out and pictures may be taken.

Council of blindelects new officer

During a recent meeting of the Southwest Missouri Friendship Council of the Blind, Cindy Duvall was elected treasurer, succeeding Jackie Kennedy, who resigned. The club shared a covered-dish luncheon.

Members heard reports on Chip Hailey's trip to Sedalia for the Missouri Council of the Blind board meeting, and another from the club president, Eileen Loyd, who attended the Lisa Dangerfield ham radio event, which was staged recently by the Joplin Association of the Blind.

Santa to visitLanagan City Hall

LANAGAN, Mo. - Children in McDonald County can tell Santa Claus if they've been naughty or nice when he visits Lanagan's City Hall.

City Clerk Christina Moon said Santa will visit from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18. The event is open to all children in McDonald County.

School to offertest-taking help

NEOSHO, Mo. - Neosho High School will offer a program aimed at helping students prepare for the standard college entrance exam.

The ACT, or American College Test, will be offered from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the high school.

For the preparatory program, students must register by Jan. 7 in the guidance office. Students will learn test-taking strategies and tips to get a better score.

Association plans open house

The Joplin Regional Office of the Alzheimer's Association of Southwest Missouri will be the host for a holiday open house on Friday, Dec. 17, in Suite E at 1823 E. 20th St.

Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Those attending the open house will be able to meet with the support staff and browse through the multimedia library. Refreshments will be served.

Civil War musicto be presented

REPUBLIC, Mo. - A performance of Civil War music will be presented by the Children's Orff Ensemble of Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, at 6 p.m. Thursday at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield near Republic.

The free performance will take place in the visitor center.

The ensemble is composed of 27 fifth-graders from the Springfield area.

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is 10 miles southwest of Springfield at the intersection of Route ZZ and Farm Road 182.
