ANGELA N. PIERCE is one of eight doctoral students selected to receive the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship at the University of Kansas as they begin the 2011-12 academic year.
Pierce is the daughter of Sondra Moran, of Joplin, and a graduate of Joplin High School.
Pierce is majoring in anatomy and cell biology at KU Medical Center. She plans to pursue a career as a pain research neurobiologist, serve as a liaison between collaborating health care disciplines, and advocate public policy for complementary health care research on a federal and international scale. At KU, Pierce’s research is focused on the neurological mechanisms of pain.
She completed a doctorate of chiropractic in 2010 from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and is a nationally board certified chiropractic physician. She received bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and Spanish from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.
Self Graduate Fellowships are four-year awards for new or first-year Ph.D. students. The award covers full tuition and fees, provides a $29,000 annual payment, and includes a development program.
