NOTABLE: Jackie Westervelt

COLUMBUS, Kan. — JACKIE WESTERVELT, of rural Columbus, Kan., founded The Twister Sisters Women’s Outreach & Disaster Relief after the May 22 tornado to help women and children during times of natural disaster or devastating personal circumstance.

The nonprofit organization collects and distributes items to tornado victims that are not normally donated during times of catastrophe, such as hairbrushes, combs, mirrors, lip gloss, nail polish and personal hygiene items. The idea is to pamper and restore dignity to the survivors of natural disasters and personal trauma.

Using donated items, Westervelt thought she would put everything in a nice gift bag with a pretty ribbon on it, but she began getting donations of new and used purses, so she used them instead.

“The ladies loved them,” she said. “I called the bags Pamper Packages.”

Her website is www.thetwistersisters.org.
