EMORY MELTON, a former state senator from Cassville, was recently named a recipient of The Missourian Award.
The annual award honors Missourians who have made an outstanding contribution to their state or country in civics, business, art or politics.
Melton has been a practicing attorney and newspaper publisher since 1947, and is the former owner and publisher of the Cassville Republican.
He was elected to the Missouri Senate in 1972 and served for 24 years before retiring in 1996. He was famous for reading every bill.
Melton, 87, also is a local historian, and is considered one of the leading experts on the history of Southwest Missouri and the Civil War in the Ozarks. He most recently served on the boards of the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Foundation and the Missouri State Historical Society.
