Charlene Nolan

JOPLIN, Mo. — Charlene (Dale) Nolan, MT (ASCP), of Joplin, Mo., was born Feb. 21, 1934. She departed this life on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at the age of 79 years.

She was the daughter of Gordon and Juanita Dale. They precede her in death as does her sister, Sue Ellen Long. She has a brother, Jim, in Oakland, Calif. Charlene is survived by her four children and their spouses, Debi Abernathy (Larry), Doug Nolan (Lisa), Jennifer Martino and Jim Nolan (Claudette); six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a niece; and two nephews.

Charlene graduated from Joplin High School where she played the trumpet in the marching band. She earned an A.S. degree from Joplin Junior College where she was editor of the school newspaper and president of the Student Council. She played the bass violin and piano. She was a queen candidate. Known to be quick with a joke, she was memorialized on the pages of the 1953-54 Junior College yearbook as "that vivacious redhead".

Charlene went on to attend and graduate from the School of Medical Technology at General Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. In 1955, she became a registered Medical Technologist having passed the national registry for American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

On Sept. 11, 1955, she married Lt. John F. Nolan, USAF. During their marriage, the couple were stationed at numerous Air Force bases throughout the country.

Charlene returned to Joplin in 1969. She subsequently earned a B.S. degree from MSSU. Throughout her career, she worked with immense pride and integrity for Upsher Laboratories and Freeman Hospital as supervisor of the hematology, urinalysis and coagulation departments. She was a longtime faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Joplin.
