CARTHAGE, Mo. —
James William Cole Jr., age 69, Carthage Mo., passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 7, 1944, in Carthage, to James William and Mary Lee (Williams) Cole.
James worked as a claims representative with the Social Security Administration, retiring in 1993. He served with the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerry Ronald Cole; and one sister, Diana Cheryl Gollhofer.
James is survived by one son, Jay Cole and wife, Jennifer, Overland Park, Kan.; one daughter, Jana Earll, Pierce City, Mo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his three cats, Mama, Tabby and Fluffy, who loved him dearly.
Jim loved to watch and care for the many beautiful birds in his front yard. He never met an animal he didn't love and every animal instantly loved him. He truly was a "Dr. Doolittle". Jim devoted his life to becoming a single parent to his own children when Jana was 5 and Jay 2 ½ years old. He was an amazing father. Later he cared for his own parents in their home for several years. He always gave and put everyone else before him. He also completed college classes at MSSC to graduate with a Bachelors degree in Political Science.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary Chapel, Joplin, Mo., with Rev. Jarel Burnside officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the mortuary.
