Charles Whitman Betz

PITTSBURG, KS —

Charles Betz, age 96, of Pittsburg, Kan., died at his home at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday morning the 13th of November 2012.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1916, in Englewood, Mo., to Charles and Mary Betz. He attended school in Columbia, Mo., and moved to Joplin, Mo., where he met and married Reba Armstrong of Mulberry, Kan., in 1941. She passed away in February 2003, after 62 years of marriage.

Charles served in the U.S. Army in World War II from June 1943 to December 1945, under General Patton. After returning from the war they moved to Parsons, Kan., where he was introduced to the world of printing. A short time later they moved to Girard, Kan., where he was an original founder with four others with Va-Co-Hy business forms in 1957. While in Girard, he served as a part time minister preaching at area congregations as needed for the church of Christ.

In 1971, they moved to Chanute, Kan., where he started his own quick print company, Protos, Inc. He retired and moved back to Joplin, where he was an associate minister in hospital visitation for the 26th Connecticut church of Christ. He made calls to the area hospitals daily and gained the friendship of many. After Reba passed he moved to Pittsburg, to be near his son. He was loved by many and was known as a gentleman by all. He was a faithful Christian.

He is survived by an only son, C.W. Betz and wife, Jackie, of Pittsburg; grandson, Brian, of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Nelda Betz, St. Louis, Mo.; and an older sister, Elizabeth Thurston, St. Louis. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lora May and Lydia; and one brother, Glenn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Pittsburg Church of Christ in Pittsburg. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions can be made to the Pittsburg church of Christ in care of the mortuary.

The family will receive friends 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
