Walter K. Kern

JOPLIN, Mo. — Mr. Walter Kenneth "Walt" Kern, 74, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, in the comfort of his home, after a recent battle with cancer.

Walt entered this life on Sept. 26, 1939, in Neosho, Mo., to the late Floyd Colley and Stella Goldie (Pendergraft) Kern. He was raised in the Reinmiller District of Joplin, Mo. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy, returning home to Joplin after being honorably discharged.  On July 5, 1973, in Joplin.

He was united in marriage to Janet Cupp and to this union a son and daughter were born. He retired as maintenance foreman from Lozier after 35 years of loyal service. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and loved collection Griswold Cast Iron. Walt was a Shriner and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Willard and Russell Kern.

Walt is survived by his wife, of 40 years, Janet Kern,  of the home; one son, Kenneth Kern, of Carterville, Mo.; a daughter, Amanda Kern Lesh and husband, Danny, of Neosho, Mo.; a grandson, Adam Kern, of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; a sister, Hazel Amoss and husband, Bill, of Springfield, Mo.; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Kern are 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, with Jay Farris officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. A Masonic service will be held during the visitation.

In lieu of flowers memorials are being directed to the Masonic Childrens Home and contributions may be left at the mortuary.
