John Oliver Herd

CARTERVILLE, MO —  

John Oliver Herd "Granddad", age 85, of Carterville, Mo., passed away Sept. 12, 2012, at 12:08 a.m. at the Freeman Health Systems.

John was born on Jan. 7, 1927, in Webb City, to John Oliver Herd and Sylvia Case Herd. He was a planner/scheduler for Atlas Powder Company as a trade. John was a member of the Carterville Christian Church and was a past deacon and board member. He was a United States Army Veteran and a member of the VFW and American Legion.

John married Pam Herd on Aug. 3, 1949, in Webb City. She preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2000, they had been married for 51 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Zana Landreth and husband, Fred, of Webb City; son, Kevin Herd and wife, Edith, of Columbia; sisters, Imogene Smith, of Webb City, Florine Whitescarver, of Webb City, and Wilma Dean Brown, of Webb City; sister-in-law, Cherry Furry and husband, John, of Webb City; granddaughters, Jennifer Sommer and husband, Gerald, of Webb City, Laura Tubb and husband, Justin, of Bentonville, Ark., and Stephanie Snyder and husband, Drew, of Ashland, Mo.; grandson, Freddie Landreth and wife, Kerry, of Webb City, and Jonathan Herd, of Milligan College, Tenn.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home with Sid Allsbury officiating. John will lie in state on Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for friends and family. Interment will be held in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Children's Mercy Hospital or the Arkansas Children's Hospital in his memory.

Services are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.
