CARTHAGE, MO —
Jesse Lee Ott, 91, Carthage, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Maple Tree Terrace, Carthage.
Jesse was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Bearden, Okla., the son of William and Marjorie Ott. His father died when Jesse was in the fourth grade and the family moved to Wasco, Calif., where his mother remarried Pappy Joe Simpson. Jesse graduated from Wasco High School and married his high school sweetheart, Nelda Ellenwood.
Jesse served as a 1st Lieutenant in World War II in the U.S. Army 63rd Infantry Division, 863 Field Artillery Battalion, A Company, 1st Battalion, 255 Infantry Regiment. He was distinguished with the citation of the Silver Star and Bronze Medal for bravery in combat. He was assigned to the Office of Military Government in the 863rd Field Artillery Battalion Headquarters as Assistant Battalion S-2 in Germany following World War II. Jesse remained in the Army Reserve for 33 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following World War II he moved to Southern California and earned his B.A. degree in Social/General Sciences and M.A. degree in Secondary Education. Jesse served as Director of Audiovisual Services and for 20 years served as Professor of Administration for California State University, Los Angeles. He retired a Professor Emeritus. Jesse and his second wife, Diane Magdaleno, moved to Carthage in 1979; and he was active in Carthage Historic Preservation Society and Knights of Pythias Lodge. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, the Retired Officers Association, Phi Delta Kappa and the California Audio-Visual Education Association. Jesse was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda White; beloved wife, Diane Ott; and stepbrother, John Simpson.
Survivors include three sons, Jesse Ott Jr., of Woodland Hills, Calif., Warren Ott, of Clovis, Calif., and Philip and Debbie Ott, of Irvine, Calif.; two daughters, Marlyce and Randy Brooks, of Tustin, Calif., and Nancy and Pete Greco, of Clovis; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage, followed by a visitation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Father Bill Hodgson will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
