GALENA, Kan. —
Eugene Clair Cantrell, of Miami, Okla., died at 10:30 p.m. on April 23, 2013, at the Galena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Galena, Kan.
He was born in Galena to George and Naomi Cantrell on Nov. 15, 1925.
He attended the Galena Kansas Schools and graduated from Galena High School in 1942. Eugene attended the Sixth Street Baptist Church while living in Galena. He was baptized there in 1935, and attended the church while he lived in Galena.
On Aug. 21, 1943, he married Waymeth Shetley in Columbus, Kan. She preceded Gene in death on Jan. 29 of this year.
Eugene was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in Miami. He taught Sunday School there and also was an elder for several years.
Survivors include two sisters and two brothers, Stella McMurry, of Joplin, Mo., Georgia Mattison, of Galena, Paul Cantrell and wife, Doris, of Joplin, and Harry Cantrell and wife, Dorothy, of Galena.
Eugene Joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. He was stationed on Board the USS Laurens and the USS Prairie during this tour of duty. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He then enlisted in the Army in April 1946, and was discharged in 1952. In October 1952, he reenlisted in the Navy and stayed until he was discharged in 1954.
For several years he was employed by First National Bank in Joplin, the Miami National Bank in Miami, the Bank of Quapaw, Okla., the Phoenix Federal Saving and Loan and also for Rasor-West Distributing Company.
Gene had a kind and generous heart. He was a good honest man that will certainly be missed.
He was taken to Derfelt Funeral Home for cremation. The family will conduct a joint service for both Gene and his wife, Waymeth Cantrell, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. Pastor Keith Jackson will officiate.
