Edward Broglio

JOPLIN, Mo. — Edward Broglio, 89, of Joplin, passed away on Dec. 13, 2013, at his home surrounded by his children.

Ed was born to Quinto and Angela (Gallo) Broglio in New York City, N.Y. He lived in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan in 1942.

Upon entering the Army in 1943, he was sent to Virginia Military Institute for two years where he completed the Army Specialized Training Advanced Program and was assigned to work on chemicals to treat soldiers uniforms to protect against mustard gas. After this, he was transferred to Camp Crowder to assist the war effort by working to improve radios and transmitter technology. After serving honorably during World War II, Ed attended Syracuse University in New York under the GI bill, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1947, with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

While stationed at Camp Crowder, Ed met Mildred Stark at a USO dance. He and Mildred were married on Feb. 7, 1948, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Monett, Mo. They moved to Pittsfield, Mass., where Ed was employed by General Electric in their Naval Ordnance Department for seven years.

In 1954, Ed and Mildred relocated to Joplin, where Ed worked for Eagle Picher Industries for 33 years. During his career at Eagle Picher, Ed designed specialty batteries and developed battery manufacturing processes for the space program and defense industry. He also worked on one of the first electric car prototypes. Ed and a dedicated group of engineers at Eagle Picher designed the batteries for the Apollo 13 lunar module, which were essential for the safe return of the astronauts on that mission. Batteries designed and built by Ed and the engineers at Eagle Picher remain on the moon today.
