Mervin L. Parker

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Mervin L. Parker, age 87, of Webb City, Mo., passed away at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital following a sudden short illness.

He was born Oct. 30, 1926, the son of Philo W. Parker and Della Ralston Parker on a farm east of Carthage, the fourth child of this union.

Mervin married his high school sweetheart Loretta F. Miller on Oct. 16, 1944, in Girard, Kan. and she survives.  He was a devoted husband and father to three surviving children, Kenneth L. Parker and wife, Pam, of Webb City, Lynnette F. Shelley and husband, Tom, of Carthage and Mark W. Parker and wife, Ann, of Webb City; six grandchildren, Karie, Kent, Eric, Chase, Kelsey and Kassie; two step- grandchildren, Mike and Michelle; and 10 great- grandchildren; and five step- great-grandchildren.

Mervin worked 49 years achieving top tenured employee at Steadley Company in Carthage retiring in 1993. He and his wife co-owned Webb City Florist for 25 years. Mervin was a Christian man who loved God and his Bethel United Methodist Church where he attended all of his life, serving as worship leader and Sunday school leader. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and belonged to CMA and Tri State Travelers motorcycle clubs for many years. Mervin and Loretta were members of the Carthage Marble Squares and enjoyed square dancing for several years. They attended many National Square Dancing conventions in many states.  He coached numerous little league teams for several years and was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinal and Webb City Cardinal fan, attending all State Championship football games and he also attended World Series games for his St. Louis Cardinals.  Mervin held the longest attendance record for consecutive home and away games at Carthage Senior High School from 1949 to 1974 and was presented with a game ball during half time ceremonies where he graduated in 1944.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, at 10:30 a.m.in the Simpson Funeral Home chapel in Webb City with the Reverend Crystal Wicks officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
