JOPLIN, Mo. —
Helen Lorene Spence, 83, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Monday, March 18, 2013, at Joplin Health and Rehab after a sudden illness.
Helen entered this life on March 17, 1930, in Houston, Mo., born to the union of the late John and Cora (Hall) Owen. Her formative years were spent in Houston, where she also attended Houston Schools.
On Dec. 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Roscoe "Gene" Spence and to this union two children were born. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1990.
Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with them. She also loved playing cards, bingo and going to the casinos.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gerald Wayne Spence; and one daughter, Barbara Jean Lovell.
Helen is survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one sister, Lillian Diederich, of Grandview, Mo.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 21, at 12 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, with Rev. Bob Simon officiating. Visitation with be prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Burial to follow in Carl Junction Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to the American Cancer Society.
