Paul E. Kuehn

JOPLIN, Mo. — Paul Eugene Kuehn, of Joplin, Mo., died Thursday, April 3, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

He was born to the late Henry and Flossie Kuehn, of Kingman, Kan., on Sept. 5, 1931. He attended Kingman High School where he played basketball for a winning 1949 team. He volunteered for service with the United States Marine Corps in November of 1951, trained at Camp Pendleton in California and was flown to South Korea in August of 1952 in an emergency reinforcement. He served on the front lines with the 1st Marine Division defending Seoul, where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart. Later, he was chosen to serve in an honor guard for President-elect Eisenhower during his visit to South Korea in December of 1952.

Paul returned to the U.S. in 1953 and began work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, where he met Armella Mae Hageman, the couple later marrying on Feb. 29, 1956. Paul was a 20 year veteran of the Joplin Fire Department, retiring in 1979. He was a long-time member of V.F.W. Post 534 in Joplin. Paul enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was also an avid collector of antiques and a familiar face at area auctions, devoting his time to buying, selling, and refinishing furniture.

Paul is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Armella; four children, Paula Diane Carsel, of Granby, William Paul Kuehn, of Oronogo, David Matthew Kuehn, of Pittsburg, Kan. and John Charles Kuehn, of Joplin; as well as four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated and the memorial service is private. Please make donations to your favorite veterans charity in memory of Paul in lieu of flowers to the family.
