Vera V. Collins

EL DORADO SPRINGS, Mo — Vera Viola (Wynes) Collins, 94, passed away on Aug. 19, 2013.

She was born in a very small family home south of Dedrick, Mo., to Lula May (Simmons) Wynes and George Washington Wynes, March 26, 1919. Vera was the 7th of 8 children.

Vera attended 11 years in Stockton Schools, but her 12th year moved and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1938. She taught school in a one room school house for a short time before her marriage to Ira Eugene Collins on Feb. 17, 1940, and to this union was born two children, Marcella (Marcy) and Gary.

Vera's life centered around God and family. She was a devoted wife to Eugene, who preceded her in death in 1992. Also preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters, Mildred Davidson, Lola Korth and Velda Wynes; three brothers, Raymond, Roy and Lawrence Wynes. She and her brothers and sisters all grew up in the Stockton, El Dorado Springs and Nevada, Mo.,  area and resided close by most of their lives.

After surviving the death of her husband, she became an avid quilt maker who made beautiful prize winning quilts for her children and all her grandchildren. At the age of 88, she and her quilting talents were spotlighted and pictured in the "Eye-Catching Quilts" feature of the April 2007, issue of Country Woman Lifestyle Magazine. She had served as Election Judge for 25 years.

She was a role model of strength, courage, work ethic and sense of humor. She was a true Christian who practiced her faith as a Baptist her entire adult life and enjoyed singing alto in a gospel quartet during the 1950's.

She took great pleasure in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very talented cook and seamstress. Many friends and families were blessed by her generous gift of hospitality. Her ability to prepare large, scrumptious meals were appreciated and looked forward to by her family and many friends. She was admired and respected by all who knew her and will be sadly missed for her quick wit, genuine spirit and kindness.

During the 1950's and 1960's she raised hundreds of chickens and sold eggs, a long time before it became the big business it is today. She grew the most delicious tomatoes, corn, green beans and potatoes in her garden and mowed her large lawn until she was 90 years old. She has left us a priceless legacy of strength, courage, great work ethic, a path to follow and a place to arrive, where all is well forever.

Surviving are one brother, James Clarence Wynes, 98, of Lawrence, Kan.; her two children, Marcella (Marcy) Newman and husband, Jim, Webb City, Mo.,  and Gary Collins Dedrick; seven grandchildren, Kim Hines, Chance Hines and Christopher Newman, all of Webb City, Justine Winkler and husband, Frank, of Joplin, Mo., Chandler Collins and wife, Kali, El Dorado Springs, Kamron Johnson and husband, Chad, Willard and Casey Crocker and husband, Josh, Springfield, Mo.; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Rozella Gammon, Harwood, Mo.; and many cousins and friends.

Visitation was held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, with services at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22. Burial was in El Dorado Springs Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
