Virgil Neely

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Virgil Neely age, 92, of Carthage, Mo. passed away Jan. 18, 2013, at Freeman Hospital at 6:25 p.m. after a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 4, 1920, and was the son of late Reverend Oliver and Elsie Neely of Cedar Springs, Mo.

He graduated from Dadeville High School in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Karnes. He retired after 30 years of service from Hercules Powder Company in Carthage, Mo.

Virgil enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling, and working in the garden. He also enjoyed the good company of friends at the Carthage Senior Center where he and his wife Frances spent many a day. He attended Camp Joy Ministries in Joplin, Mo. and enjoyed leading the old time song service every Sunday.

He was preceded in death by his wife, of 54 years Vi Neely; and his two infant sons, Ronald and Donald; as well as his brother, Obie Neely; and sisters, Lois McGehee and Bertie Howell.

He is survived by his wife, of 13 years Frances Neely; and his brothers, Kenneth Neely, of Dadeville, Mo., Joe Neely, of Napa, Calif., Tim Neely, of Commerce, Okla.; his sisters, Winnie Smith, of Ash Grove, Mo., Esther Tannehill, of Springfield, Mo., Sylvia Stockton, of Sacramento, Calif; He is also survived his sons, Robert (Bob) and Norma Neely, of Harrah, Okla., Jim Neely and Linda Neumann, of Carthage, Mo., Mike and Debbie Neely, of Olympia, Wash. and David and Hazel Neely, of Murrieta, Calif.; and daughters, Diana and Charlie Foster, of Independence, Mo., Gloria and Jess Gourley, of Carthage, Mo., Sherry and Brian Hayden, of Joplin, Mo; and step-daughter, Barbara and Phillip Forte, of Winter Haven, Fla.; Along with  20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. at Weng Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeff Martin officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery south of  Jasper, Mo. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Weng Funeral Chapel in Jasper.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Camp Joy Ministries in Virgils name.
