JOPLIN, MO —  

Richard Gordon (Dick) Hoskins, age 86, of Joplin, passed away at 1:46 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

Born Jan. 21, 1927, in San Diego, Calif., he was the son of the late Gordon and Bernice Fisher Hoskins and had lived in Joplin since 1969. Dick served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, retiring as sergeant first class. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring, he worked 20 years for American Business Systems. Dick loved the outdoors. His interest included hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was also a licensed private pilot. He and his wife played autoharp in a local dulcimer group.

He married Nellie L. Autrey on Aug. 20, 1949, in Fort Smith, Ark. She survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Laura Hurn and husband, Jhan, of Joplin; a son, Bob Hoskins and wife, Kathryn, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister, Susan Amesse, of Bisbee, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hamilton and husband, Wade, Amanda Stanley and husband, Ryan, Devin Hurn and wife, Courtny, Amanda and Matthew Messbarger; and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Elizabeth Smith Waggoner and Barbara Howard, preceded him in death.

Military graveside rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary.
