CARTHAGE, Mo. — Edgar Biddle Freund, CLU/ChFC, age 83, Carthage, Mo., passed away peacefully March 27, 2014, from complications arising from multiple myeloma bone cancer. He was attended thru the loving care of his family, assisted by Visiting Angels and Hospice.

Ed was born March 31, 1930, in Cole Camp, Mo., son of the late Roy and Mabel Freund, of Warsaw, Mo. He grew up in Houstonia and Warsaw where he graduated Salutatorian, Warsaw,Mo., was a graduate of CMSU where he was voted Most Popular Boy on Campus and named All Conference on the Mules 1952 basketball team. He served as Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, as well as playing for the Army Fort Riley hoopsters where he was named MVP player in the Armys AAU Tournament. He taught high school industrial education in Kansas City, Mo., before starting with State Farm Insurance where he served as an agent and District Manager from 1960, until his passing. In 1998, he was named to the CMSU Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Mules 1951 Basketball Team.

Ed volunteered for numerous civic and board activities, including UMB Bank, Broadview Country Club, Rotary Club, MSSU Booster Club, St. Lukes Nursing Home, Estate Planning Council ChFC, Investors Club and Carthage Police and Fire Pension Committee, among many others.

He was a passionate outdoors man enjoying golf, hunting, fishing, and always a good joke with family and friends. He was a selfless servant, offering a helping hand to anyone in need, and the amazing talent of making everyone into his best friend.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 2, at the First United Methodist Church at 617 S. Main Street, Carthage, Mo., from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Carthage. A private graveyard service for family only will follow in Warsaw, Mo. and internment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Warsaw.

He is survived by his wife, Tonya Freund; three brothers and a sister, (Roy, Larry and Joe Freund and Marilyn Stevinson and their families); a son and five daughters and their families, (Jim Freund, Nancy Grego, Denise Farris, Elaina Edman, Jennifer Hill and Tina Freund); 11 grandchildren. (Todd and Brandon Grego, Noelle Nauss, AJ Farris, Ethan Edman, Elise Kyle, Danny Hill, Nicholas Cusick, Quinlyn and Dausen Tosh, and Paisley Freund); and three great-grandchildren, (Trenton Grego, Charlie Grego and Madeline Nauss).

Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Lukes Nursing Home or First United Methodist Church of Carthage.
