Rest-A-While, Kan. —
Lola Sutherland, of Rest-a-While, Kan. passed away at 1:40 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, 2012 , at the age of 91.
She was born to Henry and Mary Bell (Stamps) Allen in Thayer, Kan. on May 25, 1921, into a family where she was the tenth of children. She moved with her family from Thayer to Parsons, Kansas when she was 3 years old and attended Parsons Public Schools through high school. During World War II, she worked as a bay leader at the Parsons Army Ammunition Plan, where she met the man who would become her husband, Emmett T-Bone Sutherland.
She and T-Bone were married on May 20, 1944, in Seattle, Wash., shortly before he deployed to the Pacific for his wartime service. While T-Bone served in the Navy, Lola served the war effort as a wing riveter at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle.
After the War, the couple relocated to Columbus, Kan., where Lola owned and operated Kellys Photo Studio and T-Bone served as the youngest elected Cherokee County Sheriff. In the 1950's, they moved to Rest-a-While, Kan., to a unique home that T-Bone designed and the couple constructed.
Lola served as the president of the Galena, Kan. Lady Elks Club, and was a long-time member of the Spring River Boat and Ski Club where she enjoyed her 91st birthday celebration last year. She supported T-Bone during his tenure as the Postmaster of Galena, and his term as the Secretary-Treasurer of the National Association of Postmasters. Lola was also a member of the Columbus First Baptist Church.
From the mid-1980's to the mid-2000's, Lola was a floral designer in her youngest sons flower shop, Baxter Floral in Baxter Springs, Kan., working side-by-side with her daughter-in-law, Peggy. Lola, while small in stature, was a force to be reckoned with. For those who were fortunate to call her a friend will dearly miss her.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband, T-Bone, in 1985.
Lola is survived her loving sons, Sid (Marjorie), of Tulsa and Brent (Peggy), also of Rest-a-While. She will forever be the cherished Nanny of her grandchildren, Tom, Shawn, Jennifer and Amber; and her great-grandson, Scotty.
Viewing will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.
A celebration of Lolas life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan. Internment immediately following services at Gandy Cemetery in Rest-a-While.
Memorials may be made to her favorite charity The American Cancer Society.
