Joseph J. Smith

QUAPAW, OK —   

Joseph J. "Joe" Smith, of Quapaw, Okla., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Heartland Plaza in Miami, Okla. He was 89.

Joe was born May 30, 1923, at Quapaw, to Percy and Josephine (Hicks) Smith. He was a life long Quapaw resident. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He owned the Bank of Quapaw for many years where he was the president and janitor. Joe was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Quapaw, past member of the Quapaw School Board, Ottawa County Conservation Board, Ottawa Business Development Authority of the Ottawa Tribe, the Oklahoma Banker's Association, Miami Lodge No. 140 A.F.&A.M., Tulsa Scottish Rite Consistory and Akdar Shrine Temple. He was awarded NEO A&M College Outstanding Alumni of the Year.

Joe married Gladys Talbot on Nov. 19, 1945, at Columbus, Kan. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Cindi and Dick Lillard, of Miami, Okla., C.Ann and Terry Fitzgibbon, of Tulsa, Okla., Josie and Ralph Bilke, of Quapaw, and Ginger and Ara Pridjian, of Haslett, Mich.; two  brothers and their wives, Dabney and Virginia Smith, of Quapaw, and Marshall and Corinne Smith, of Miami; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Percy Smith Jr.; and a sister, Anna Rose Smith.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Miami. The Rev. Furan Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in G.A.R. Cemetery, of Miami. Pallbearers will be Rich Lillard, Michael Fitzgibbon, Shane Fitzgibbon, Chance Bilke, Brian Kelly and Marshall Smith. Dabney Smith Jr., Rod Arnall, Kim Arnall, Art Cousatte, H.C. Bauman and Jimmy Johnson will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home, of Miami.
