TEMPLETON, Calif. —
Charles Stephen Carpenter died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at his Templeton home. His family is so grateful to the Central Coast Hospice team for his end of life care.
Steve was born on July 17, 1947 in Joplin, Mo. He graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1965 and Missouri Southern State University in 1969.
At the age of 13, he started his first business with his brother, Phil, selling Grit Magazine.
Steve served in the U.S. Army Reserves and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with an MBA in 1971.
He had started several businesses and said the secret to success was, "Never start a company your wife can't run."
Steve married Sharon Brown on Oct. 20, 1973, on the bank of the Hiwassee River in Tennessee.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed canoeing, fishing and golf. When they moved to California in 1979 Steve became a member of the Northern California Golf Association and Summitpointe Men's Club.
On his daughter Sharai's eighth birthday he aced a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Feather River, and had a custom golf club made for his son, Trent when he was two. He even traveled to Scotland to play one hole on the oldest golf course, St. Andrews. He was an avid OU fan.
In 1999, Steve and Sharon moved to California's Central Coast to build a new home and retire.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sharon Brown Carpenter; son, Stephen Trent Carpenter; daughter, Sharai Carpenter; brother, Philip Stanton Carpenter; sister-in-law Darlene; niece. Heather; mother-in-law, Lalia L. Brown; and many friends and relatives.
A private service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25.
