Skip Scott

GALENA, Kan. — Richard Forrest "Skip" Scott, age 90, rural Galena, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Quaker Hill Nursing Center, Lowell, Kan., following an illness.

Skip was born July 28, 1922, in Whittier, Calif. His parents were Thomas and Bertha (Rowland) Scott. He was a lifetime resident of the Riverton/Lowell area.

Mr. Scott graduated from Riverton High School in 1940. He was a member of Lowell Friends, Church. He worked several years as a bookkeeper at Spencer Chemical Company, Riverton, Kan. He worked at several other endeavors over his life, including car salesman, dairy farmer and a truck farmer. He sold produce out of the back of a truck at Bob's Furniture, Joplin, Mo. He and his wife owned and operated Skip Scott Acres, west of Galena. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a dedicated family man and felt the best when he was with the kids and grandkids.

Richard Forrest Scott married Betty Lou Swaim 70 years ago on March 9, 1943, in Joplin. She survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Gary Wayne Scott, Baxter Springs, Kan.; two daughters, Sharon Anne (and Don) Ulery and Cathy Lou (and Larry) Thomas, both of Paola, Kan.; one sister, Alice (and Raymond) Dixon, Riverton, Kan.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Pauline Day, Irma Crane, Dora Lou Carnahan and Bonnie Jean Wilson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Pastor Jeff Adams will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Baxter Springs. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Quaker Hill Nursing Center Activity Fund, or to Lowell Friends Church because of the love and care he had received from them.
