JOPLIN, Mo. —
Mary L. Henson, age 76, passed away at 4:25 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Emerald Pointe Nursing Home, Galena, Kan., following an illness.
She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Her warm and generous nature, her laugher and her willingness to open up her heart with sincere welcome was such a part of who she was.
Mary was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Joplin. Her parents were Arba J. and Goldie (Miller) VanValkenburg. She was a lifetime resident of the Joplin area.
She worked as a seamstress at King Louie Shirt Factory, Baxter Springs, Kan. Mary was full of life and loved to entertain her grandchildren, cook big wonderful meals and go play BINGO.
Mary was married to Charles E. Henson the love of her life, for 60 years. He survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Chuck Henson, Riverton, Kan., and Frank Henson, Joplin; one daughter, Junell Henson, Joplin; three sisters, Patty Rose, Redings Mill, Mo., Margie Cady, Joplin, and Joy Underwood, Hays City, Kan.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother; and her granddaughter, Alissa Henson Gutierrez, who left us the day before Mary so she could be there for her grandma and they could walk through the gates of Heaven together.
Mrs. Henson was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, for cremation. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Pastor Audie Tash will officiate.
