William Yocum

JOPLIN, Mo. —   

William W. "Pappy" Yocum, age 80, Joplin, passed away at 8:04 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Landmark Hospital after an illness.

William was born Feb. 17, 1933, in Duenweg, Mo., to the late Charles Rashie Yocum and Anna May Dale Yocum and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.

He graduated from Webb City High School and enlisted with the United States Marine Corps in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked for many years at ICI, formerly known as Atlas Powder, as a chemical operator, retiring in 1993.  

Known by family and friends as "Pappy", he was a member of the Joplin Elk's Lodge No. 501 and First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching sporting events. In his earlier years, he was a member of several bowling leagues with the Elks and his co-workers at Atlas.  

He married Phyllis Jones on Oct. 16, 1955, in Hollister, Mo. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Donald Yocum and his wife, Margaret, Joplin, Rebecca Yocum and her husband, William Unland, Leawood, Kan., and Wes Yocum, Jefferson City, Mo.; grandchildren, Philip Yocum and his wife, Amy, Joplin, Kelly Yocum Key and her husband, Brian, Kansas City, Malarie Yocum McFerran and her husband, Allen, Fort Smith, Ark., Cassidy Unland, also honorary granddaughter, Courtney Collins-Gunter; two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Suzanne Key and Emerson Yocum McFerran; many nieces, nephews and special friends. In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Key.

Graveside services are planned for Thursday at 10 a.m. at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial services are planned for Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Dave Burgess and grandson, Rev. Brian Key will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parker Mortuary Chapel.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Overland Park, Kan., in care of Parker Mortuary.
