JOPLIN, Mo. — Shirley Kirk, age 76, Joplin, Mo. passed from this life while at her home, on the morning of Thursday, June 6, 2013, following a determined battle with cancer.

She was born in Neck City, Mo., to Juanita Olean and Vernon Eugene Clark. They preceded her in death.

Shirley married Frederick Kirk on Sept. 16, 1961. He survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Melissa Gilbert and husband, Arik, Joplin.; a brother, Don Clark and wife, Jacquie, of Grove.; and a sister, Sharon Belk, of Webb City.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

She attended Webb City High School and worked behind a soda fountain in a drugstore downtown.

She was employed at Keystone Cleaners in Joplin and retired from One Hour Cleaners at 16th and Main in Joplin. She had been a member of Connor Avenue Baptist Church, Joplin.

Shirley's joys included music (from the orchestral stylings of Andre Rieu to the beat of a rock and roll drum solo), reading, working in her yard, caring for her cat, laughing and chatting with her daughter and most of all spending her days with her husband.

She was a friend-maker who never met a stranger and she is dearly missed.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Midland Cremation Society. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at Camp Joy Worship Center, 3125 W. 20th in Joplin, under the direction of Pastor Jeff D. Martin. Friends and loved ones will be welcome to speak of memories of Shirley. A meal/reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in her memory to the Joplin Animal Adoption and Resource Center, PetSmart Charities, or the American Cancer Society.
