Charley Greer


Charles “Charley” Greer, 78, Joplin, Mo., passed away at 11:50 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at his home after a battle with cancer.

Charley was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Muskogee, Okla., the son of Lloyd and Margaret (Sturm) Greer. He graduated from Central High School, attended Minnesota Bible College and graduated from Ozark Bible College in 1957.

He married Julia Kathryn “Judy” Kannel of Montpelier, Ohio, on June 5, 1954. He and Judy had a student ministry in Oswego, Kan., for three years, and a seven year ministry with Central Church of Christ in O’Fallon, Ill., and a seven and a half year ministry with the West Side Church of Christ in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1972 the family moved to Wichita, Kan. to serve with the Riverlawn Christian Church and remained there for more than 29 years until his retirement in 2000. After retirement, they became involved in interim ministries in Wabash, Ind., Lamar, Mo., Vinita, Okla., and Dodge City, Kan. He also led revivals, speaking engagements and seminars throughout the Midwest.

He served as president of the Kansas Christian Convention, and the Christian Evangelizing Association of Kansas, and as a member of the North American Christian Convention Committee. He was on the board of trustees at Ozark Christian College for 30 years, retiring from there in 2007.

Survivors include his wife Judy, of 58 years; sons, Scott Greer and wife, Suzanne, Bartlett, Tenn., Kevin Greer and wife, Debbie, Joplin, and Dale Greer and wife, Marsha, Topeka, Kan.; daughters, Dawn Moss and husband, Steve, Muskogee, and Julie Weece and husband, Paul, Stillwater, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Glen Greer and wife, Frankie, Porter, Okla.; and sister, Carolyn McElroy and husband, George, Phoenix, Ariz.

Private family graveside services will be held prior to the service in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday at the College Heights Christian Church Chapel, 4311 Newman Road. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Church.

Memorial contributions are requested to Ozark Christian College, or College Heights Christian Church Mission Program for Ministries associated with Charley’s grandchildren.

Services have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin.
