JOPLIN, Mo. —


Awilda Whyte, age 77, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the St. Luke's Nursing Center.
She was born on June 8, 1934, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to Victor Medina and Eleonora Miranda. Mrs. Whyte was a member of the Blendville Christian Church and worked for Southwestern Bell as a technician retiring in 1984, after 31 years of service, and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She was married to Raymond Whyte on Dec. 11, 1952. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1991.
Awilda is survived by her son, Bob Whyte and wife, Susan, of Webb City; daughter, Debbie Smith and husband, Greg, of Webb City; brothers, David Medina, of Spain, and Miguel Medina, of Puerto Rico; sister, Eleonora Fly, of Puyallup, Wash.; grandchildren, Stacey Struble and husband, Phil, of Oronogo, Bryan Whyte and wife, Lyn, of Oronogo, Tom Smith, of Joplin, and Jennifer Whyte, of Atchison, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Anna Schachtner, of Oronogo, Olivia Whyte, of Oronogo, Jonathan Rousselot, of Hollister, and Miles Smith, of Denver; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by a great-grandchild, Joshuah Schachtner.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City, with Virgil Eubanks officiating. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.
