JOPLIN, MO —
Janis D. Koonce Smith, age 64, Joplin, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away after a long illness Tuesday, May 2, 2012, at Mercy Hospital.
Janis was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Joplin, to the late Garland Leonard Koonce and Helen Louise (Staten) Koonce. She had lived in the Joplin area all of her life.
She created and served as the executive director of the Joplin R-8 Foundation, retiring in 1997. She was a member, Sunday school teacher and a vacation Bible school director of the First Presbyterian Church in Joplin. Janis served two terms on the Joplin R-8 school board, was a member of the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club and was also a den leader for six years for the Boy Scouts. She was most proud that her two sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her sister, Judith Valtakis.
She married Rockford E. Smith on Feb. 16, 1968, in Joplin. He survives.
Additional survivors include her four children, Bryce Smith, of Topeka, Kan., Bradford Smith and his wife, Kirstie, of Joplin, Courtney Smith, of Joplin, Cidney Enyart and her husband, Brett, of Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, James Koonce and his wife, Jean, of Southwest City, Mo.; one sister, Elaine French and her husband, Dave of Littleton, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Chandler Carpenter, Savana Smith, Bradford Smith Jr. and Benjamin Enyart.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery with Rev. David Burgess officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary.
