KENEOHE, HI —
Dr. Steven Keith DeWitt, 64, of Kaneohe, Hawaii, entered into his rest on Dec. 26, 2012, in Kailua, Hawaii, after a short illness.
Steve was born to Keith and Evelyn Mowell DeWitt on Aug. 7, 1948, in Monett, Mo., and grew up in Neosho and Cassville, Mo. He quit school and joined the Navy at age 17, spending four years as an air traffic controller. After leaving the Navy, he lived in a variety of places around the country until he found the home of his heart in Hawaii. He received an undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., and was president of his class all four years. He then returned to Hawaii, where he completed the University of Hawaii Integrated Medical Residency Program. He practiced Internal Medicine in Ohio, Virginia, and Hawaii, and specialized in HIV and Hepatitis C care. At the time of his death, he was the acting medical director of the Halawa Correctional Facility.
Steve married the love of his life, Beth Wyld, on Sept. 22, 1996, in Beaufort, S.C. She survives of the home.
Also surviving are his parents, Keith and Evelyn DeWitt, of Joplin, Mo.; three children, Keith, Ryan and Jason Payne, of Virginia; five siblings and their spouses, Mike and Ruthann DeWitt, of Oronogo, Mo., Jan and Ed Watson, of Joplin, Gary and Mary DeWitt, of Hermann, Mo., Tricia and Jay McKay, of Liberal, Mo., and Beth and Jeff Hyde, of Canyon Country, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. DeWitt lived a life of service and will be greatly missed by his patients, colleagues, friends and family.
His body has been cremated and services will be held in Hawaii and Missouri, at a later date.
