Ray G. VanderLinden

JOPLIN, Mo. — Ray George VanderLinden, age 87, of Joplin, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital.

Born July 18, 1925, in Knoxville, Iowa, he was the son of the late Ira and Belle Sims VanderLinden and had lived in the Joplin area since 1945.

Ray retired from the Newton County Sheriffs Department as a Jailer in 1988. For over 30 years he worked as a parts inspector for machine shops, including Rocketdyne and RGS Engineering. He also worked as a carpenter and farmer. A U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific, holding the rank of Seaman First Class and was decorated with seven Battle Stars. He was a member of VFW Post No. 534 and American Legion Post No. 13.

On Sept. 20, 1945, he married Betty L. Wilkins in Columbus, Kan. She preceded him in death Nov. 20, 1991;a son, Jimmie Ray VanderLinden; eight brothers and sisters; and a granddaughter, Sharon Kay VanderLinden, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Ann Randall, of Webb City; three siblings, Edna Mae Nelson, of Knoxville, Iowa, Lucille Iruis, of Newton, Iowa, Dale VanderLinden, of Newton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Leslie Larson and husband, Bryan, Rhonda Price and husband, Gary, all of Webb City, Missy Brown and husband, Ethan, of Muskogee, Okla., Jimmie VanderLinden, of Conway, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Nathan Price, Trevor Price, Brooke Larson and Will Larson, all of Webb City, Nathan Brown and Tristan Brown, both of Muskogee; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Chapel with Rev. Johnny Wilkins officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Burkhart Cemetery with Tim, Lee, Pat, and Mike Wilkins serving as pallbearers and Don Hunt serving as honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion of V.F.W., in care of the mortuary.
