JOPLIN, MO — Betty Jean Courtney, 79, Joplin, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, following a lengthy illness. She was born Sept. 7, 1930, to Henry and Lola (Frailey) Rhinehart. Mrs. Courtney was a lifelong area resident and a homemaker. She was a member of Granby First Baptist Church and Gingham Girls. Betty married Norman Courtney, Jan. 7, 1948, in Harrison, Ark. He preceded her in death Jan. 18, 2007. In addition, she was preceded in death by a son, Allen Courtney; two sisters, Billie Barton and Lucille Ferguson; and two brothers, Harley Stephens and Henry Jr. She is survived by a son, Larry Courtney, Galena, Kan.; a daughter, Casey Mehrens, Neosho; five grandchildren, Janet Scheppert, Jenifer Dyer, Chrystal Courtney, Chastity Ellis and Halle Courtney; five great-grandchildren, Hunter Dyer, Alex Scheppert, Abby Scheppert, Devin Lindstedt and Baby Mehrens, who is on the way; and a sister, Katy Hyde, Oklahoma City, Okla. Betty was a beloved mother and grandmother as well as a devoted Christian and prayer warrior to anyone in need. She was also always loving and caring to her extended family, the employees of the C & N Corp. She was a true inspiration to her partners of the 4 Women on the Route. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Granby First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Granby Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
