Norene Nielsen

QUAPAW, Okla. — Ada Norene (Brown) Nielsen, 88, of rural Quapaw / Baxter Springs passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at 12:45 a.m. peacefully at Freeman Hospital after years of failing health with heart disease and diabetes.

She mainly died of a broken heart because her husband of 70 years had just passed away 3 weeks ago.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1925, at Rock Bridge in Douglas County, Mo., first child born to the union of Jesse and Cora Jane (Walker) Brown. She went to grade school in Vanzant and Fairview Lawn, Mo., where she  graduated from 8th grade. Then her family moved to Quapaw where her father went to work in the mines. She attended Quapaw High School. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and Patterson Mfg. Company in Miami, Okla.

She married Oluf E. Nielsen on Oct. 16, 1943, after they got married she moved to California for a short time to see her husband off to war. Oluf preceded her in death Jan. 14, 2014.   She was also preceded by  a brother, David Brown; sisters, Shirley Waldo, Roma Miller and Loetta Nelson.

Survived by a son, Arnold Nielsen his wife, Vickie; one daughter, Vivian McCormick her husband, Ted, of Baxter Springs / Quapaw area' four grandchildren, Audra McCormick- Trites and husband, Mike, of Lenexa, Kan., David Nielsen and his wife, Jessica, of Merriam, Kan., Olen Nielsen, of Riverton, Kan., Mike McCormick and his wife, Mary Kay, of Olathe, Kan; nine great-grandchildren  Andrew and Alex Trites, Evan and Noah Nielsen, Abby and Brandon Nielsen,  Hannah, Michaela and Thor McCormick.

Norene was considered the ranch manager since buying a farm East of Baxter just after World War II when her husband returned from war.  They raised cattle on the farm and did their own haying and spent years clearing the land of trees. Norene started a 15,000 contracted turkey operation with County Pride and Butter Ball out of Carthage, Mo., in 1979. She was the first woman in the four states to be recognized as an official owner and grower. The turkey farm ceased to be operated in 2001. Norene was famous with the family for cooking a good baked turkey. She baked the biggest one they could fine. Many turkeys were given to anyone in need.

Membership was held at the Quapaw First Baptist Church since 1941. She served as Sunday school teacher for the youth groups as well the womens group for years until ill health. She was a dedicated deacons wife of 58 years. She was a lifetime member of the Baxter Springs Saddle Club. Norene enjoyed reading the Joplin Globe every day. She loved to read, play games and make crafts and homemade jelly from blackberries on the farm. The family would like to express their gratitude to  Dr. Kimberly Wood, who cared for Norene for many years.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Quapaw First Baptist Church, in Quapaw, Okla. Pastor Dale Neal and Pastor Matt Robinson will officiate. Burial will follow at Baxter Springs, Cemetery in Baxter Springs, Kan. A dinner will be served at the Quapaw Baptist Church following the burial. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla.
