The Joplin Globe
JOPLIN, Mo. —
Mary Katherine Harrison (AKA Grandma Katherine), age 93, of Joplin, passed away at Freeman Hospital on July 17, 2013.
She was larger than life, generous beyond measure, with a heart big enough to share with so many over the years. Grandma Katherine was an incredible mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and had many friends.
She entered this life on Jan. 11, 1920, in Joplin, and was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years of marriage, Mearle Harrison. For many years, she worked as the food and beverage manager at the Connor Hotel and after it was closed she worked at the Junge Bakery until her retirement. She loved attending the "Hootenanny" at the ATA hall in Saginaw and almost every Friday night she had her special place to sit and meet all her friends and listen to the music. Over the last year she resided at the National Health Center in Joplin, where she loved playing bingo, attending ice cream socials and participating in Tai Chi classes.
The family wish to thank the staff of the NHC for their care and compassion of Grandma Katherine.
She is survived by her two sons, John Harrison, of Diamond, Mo., and Jim Harrison, of Anthem, Ariz.; as well as four grand children and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the Parker Mortuary on Sunday, July 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. with graveside rites at Osborne Memorial Cemetery on Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Tom Harrison, Chris Harrison, Brad Harrison and Josh Harrison.
In lieu of flowers or donations, Grandma Katherine and her family would like everyone to give big hugs to their families and friends and tell them how much they mean to you.
Mary Katherine Harrison was a great lady and proud example of our country's "Greatest Generation" and she will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.
