JOPLIN, Mo. — Juanita I. Townsend, 88, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Nov. 23, 2012, at 10:58 a.m., at Freeman West following an illness.

Juanita was born on Dec. 28, 1923, in Baxter Springs, Kan., she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha (Gibson) Roughton.

Juanita moved from Bentonville, Ark., with her family in 1946, to Joplin, Mo. She married Robert Townsend in 1944, he preceded her in death in 1970. She attended Reinmiller Baptist Church and Central Christian Center.

Survivors include two sons, Stan Townsend and his wife, Barbara, Joplin, and Damond Townsend and his wife, Janet, Joplin; one daughter, Linda Goode and husband, Everett, Duenweg, Mo.; five grandchildren, Kari and Joshua Townsend, Brent Townsend, Jennifer Baker and Marty Goade; three step-great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren;  and two brothers, David Roughton, Don Roughton, both of Joplin.

She was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Mason-Woodard Chapel.  Pastors Hank Deslatte, Doug Wilkerson, and Charles Gartner will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Stan Townsend, Damond Townsend, Brent Townsend, Josh Townsend, Jake Goade and Marty Goade. The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Mason-Woodard.

Memorial contributions may be given to Central Christian Center in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
