MIAMI, Okla. —
William “Joe” Holden, age 87, of Miami, Okla., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kan. with family by his side.
Joe was born on May 3, 1924, in Webb City, Mo. the son of the late Willard “Bill” and Cecil Mae (Bray) Holden.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his service, Joe moved to Santa Clara, Calif. where he worked 30 years, he retired in 1984. After retiring Joe became a beloved crossing guard at the busiest intersection in Santa Clara.
He moved back to the area in 2005, Joe was a member of the NRA and the VFW, he loved hunting, fishing, socializing with others but most importantly loved spending time with his family.
He married Berneice Bean, she preceded Joe in death on June 30, 2000.
He is survived by his two daughters, Paula McGowan and her husband, Jaydee, of Livermore, Calif. and Sandy Read of Rocklin, Calif.; one brother, Chester Holden of Miami; four sisters, Evelyn Snider of Pittsburg, Flo Atkinson of Miami, Dorothy Crowder and her husband, Harry, of Joplin and Marilyn West and her husband, Don, of Carl Junction, Mo.; and two grandsons, Tony and Kyle. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Berneice; his parents Bill and Cecil; one son, Johnny Holden; and by three brothers, Robert “Bob” Holden, Delmar Holden and Virgil Holden.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday Dec. 9, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel, Pastor Tracy Holden, will officiate. Burial will immediately follow in Carl Junction Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday prior to the service.
