AURORA, Mo. —
Richard Raymond Skinner, 80, went to be with our Lord early Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2014, after a long illness.
Born in Steven's Point, Wis., on July 19, 1933, to Carolyn Laural and Everett Donald Skinner, he was the oldest of five children.
After graduating from PJ Jacobs High School, he attended Michigan State University on a hockey scholarship. He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for 13 years. He finished his military career as a Captain before settling in southwest Missouri.
He retired from Mid Com Cable in Joplin in the summer of 2010.
Richard had a true servant's heart that expressed itself through his involvement in various organizations as well as in his personal life.
He was a long time active member of the Gideons International and the Promise Keepers and attended Grace Community Baptist Church.
He and his wife, Ilene, were married on Dec. 9, 1977. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, a good laugh and spending time with family and visiting with friends. He loved his family's marshmallow fights and fireworks on the 4th of July, hayrides and bon fires in the fall and Christmas breakfast. Richard was a devout man of God and a wonderful role model. We will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his wife; five children; seven stepchildren; numerous grandkids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. in the Grace Community Church, 11189 Highway K in Mount Vernon, under the care of Peterson Funeral Chapel, Aurora, Mo. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
