Margaret Crossno

JONESBORO, Ark. — Margaret Crossno, 86, Jonesboro, Ark., formerly of Neosho, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014.

She was born to James and Janie Gamble on March 3, 1927, in Ritchey, Mo. and spent most of her life in the Neosho area. She graduated from Midway High School and as an adult, later earned a degree from Crowder College.

Harold Crossno met Margaret while both were working at Camp Crowder during World War II and they were married in 1945. He was at her bedside when she passed away in the morning hours Tuesday after returning to Jonesboro Healthcare and Rehab, following a recent hospital stay. They were faithful companions for over 68 years. She was a vital and vibrant woman, who enjoyed helping people from all walks of life.  In the 1960's, Margaret earned certification as a Radiology Technician while working at the Granby Clinic. In subsequent years, she managed office operations for a number of small firms and medical practices and eventually became a Social Worker with the Missouri Department of Social Services.  Margaret willingly gave of her time to charitable organizations and served as an Area Director for the March of Dimes and devoted numerous hours to the Newton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.  She also in her retirement was a volunteer at Freeman Neosho Hospital. She was a longtime member of the Neosho United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Neosho Chapter of the American Business Womens Association and served in executive positions within that group.

In her retirement, she and Harold traveled extensively across the United States, enjoying trips to Washington DC and New York, the Black Hills of South Dakota, Alaska, California, Washington State and many other locations. She and Harold particularly enjoyed the summers they spent at their cabin on Table Rock Lake, where both were avid fishermen, always looking to catch that big bass.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Harold Gamble, of Birmingham, Ala.; and her son, Robert, of San Marcos, Calif.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Crossno, of Jonesboro, Ark.; daughter, Vera Lopez and Tony, of San Diego; son, Charles Crossno and wife, Joan, of Jonesboro and daughter in law, Patty Crossno, of San Marcos, Calif.; sister, Alice Carnahan, of Granby, as well as seven grandchildren.

A private interment ceremony will be held by family members at the Newtonia IOOF Cemetery on Saturday, March 8, with a memorial visitation and celebration of life at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on March 8.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Margaret be made to the Newton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66, Neosho, MO  64850.

Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
