JOPLIN, Mo. —
James Dale Mailes, age 76, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
James was born Sept. 28, 1936, in Glendora, Calif., son of the late Lawrence R. Mailes and Opal Nadean Macy Mailes. His family moved to Seneca when he was a child, where he graduated from Seneca High School before attending Joplin Junior College. James served in the United States Air Force and then returned to Joplin, where he worked for Atlas Powder for over 29 years before retiring in 1995.
James was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Another enjoyment was traveling to different horse racing venues with his wife and watching the horses.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Mailes.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mailes; three daughters, Sabrina Nigro, Kathy Wyatt and Brenda Bostic and husband, Mark, all of Joplin; grandchildren, Lindsey Wyatt, Matthew Robertson and Torrey Nigro; brothers, Ronald Mailes and wife, Sammie, of Sherman, Texas, Eldon Mailes and wife, Donna, of Mesa, Ariz.; sister, Norma Jean Welker and husband, Norris, of Tulsa, Okla.; several nieces and nephews.
As per James request, he was taken for cremation, there will be no formal services and disposition of his ashes to occur privately at a later date.
Parker Mortuary is in charge of cremation arrangements.
The family would like to let the doctors and staff of Joplin Health and Rehab know how much they appreciated all they did to help and also the staff of Avalon Hospice for all their help.
