Stanley C. Phillips

JOPLIN, Mo. — Stanley C. Stan Phillips, 62, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.

He was born on July 1, 1950, in Salem, Ill., to the late Wendell V. and Kathleen R. (Moyer) Phillips.  Stan was educated in Joplin and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He served as a finance specialist in The U.S. Army.

Stan resided in Sedalia, Mo., for over 30 years while working for the United States Air Force Civilian Service at Whitman air base.

He married Sue Carrico on April 8, 2005 and they moved to Joplin upon his retirement. Stan was instrumental in the original bed down of the 442d-A-10 Fighter Wing when the unit originally came to Whitman and was also a key player between DFAS, CES and Contracting with the conversion from 15 to 24 aircraft. He received recognition for his outstanding efforts in supporting and coordinating with the 442d Fighter Wing and DFAS on financial and operational requirements as the key leader in the Whitman AFB Accounting Liaison Office (ALO).

Upon his retirement in 2007, Stan was presented with the Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award by the United States Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Sue Ellen Phillips on April 4, 2013.

Stan is survived by an aunt, Rita Moyer, of Tulsa, Okla.; four cousins, Ben Moyer and wife, Peggy, Bob Moyer and wife, Kathleen, both of Tulsa, Bill Moyer and wife, Sue, of Hutchinson, Kan. and May Bosworth and husband, Tony, of San Antonio, Texas; his mother-in-law, Charlotte Carrico, of Marshall, Mo.; two sister-in-laws, Wilma Hicks and husband, Don, of Smithton, Mo. and Carol McCord, of Marshall, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Robert Carrico, of Marshall, Mo.; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Phillips are 12 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Mo., with Pastor John Mitchell officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the mortuary chapel.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
