CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Dorothy F. Ballard , age 91, of Carthage, Mo. passed away at 3:12 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Quail Creek Skilled Nursing Facility in Springfield, Mo. following a lengthy illness.
Dorothy was born Aug. 6, 1921, west of Princeton, Kan., the daughter of Troy E. and Grace M. Winters Herrring. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1939, She worked at Lake City Ordinance Plant in Independence, Mo. until 1945. She spent 18 months in Paris France with her husband, and returned to the states in 1948. They operated a grocery store and locker plant for five years in Carbondale, Kan. and was a sub mail carrier for 15 years. They moved to Carthage, Mo. in 1972 and operated Ballards Campground until 1983, when she retired.
Following her retirement, she and her husband traveled to many places and summered in Canada, fishing and hunting with her children and grandchildren. Dorothy was a member of the Christian Church in Princeton, Kan. and a member of Town and Country Jill's of Carbondale, Kan.
Dorothy married John B. Ballard April 6, 1946, in Olathe, Kan. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2007. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Bob Herring; a granddaughter, Brittany Holley; a grandson in law, Brian Andreozzi; and a great-grandson, Preston Ballard.
Survivors include a son, Steve Ballard and wife, Sandy, Fordland, Mo.; a daughter, Linda Eklund and husband, Harold, Greenfield, Mo.; a sister, Jean Stinson, Ottawa, Kan.; 12 grandchildren, Darcy Andreozzi, Shawn Eklund, Lance Ballard and wife, Michelle, Ryan Ballard and wife, Amy, Damian Ballard and wife, Tina, Chris Erwin, Dustin Horton, Joe Andreozzi, Madison Andreozzi, Jeffrey Prill, Tyler Prill, and Jacob Chalker; and two great-grandsons, Tyler and Trevor Ballard.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel in Joplin, Mo with Danny Mullins, Minister, officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Princeton, Kansas Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are requested to the American Cancer Society in care of the Mortuary.
